So what is hypnosis & how can it help?

There are many ways to describe hypnosis but I like to keep it simple & use the model of the conscious & the subconscious mind alongside the critical faculty to describe it. These parts of your mind don’t physically exist, but they’re a good representation of what’s going on.


You can think of your conscious mind as your logical mind. There are things you know to be true & helpful & if you were thinking about how to tackle a change in your life, logically you would probably know many things that might help. That should make it easy, right?


Well there’s actually another part of our mind that is much bigger & is extremely powerful in shaping our reality & that is our subconscious mind (also known as the unconscious mind). This is where our memories, emotions, habits, beliefs & our imagination lives. Every experience we’ve ever had resides here & it shapes how we understand the world.


So far so good; we have logic, we have feeling, put them together & that should give us the whole package…well, yes and no.


There’s a filter between your conscious & subconscious mind called the critical faculty that stops incoming information being automatically accepted & absorbed by the subconscious mind.


It’s thought that this filter doesn’t start to develop until between the ages of 10-12, so every experience we have before this age is stored away as fact. This can be really positive; it helps us absorb a huge amount of information as we learn about the world.


However, it can also mean that we absorb lots of negative foundations too; feelings of things like shame, insecurity, whether we’re ‘good’ or ‘bad’ or ‘pretty’ or ‘clever’ are automatically stored away & can be hard to break free from at a later stage.


Because we’re still forming our understanding of the world too, sometimes this information has been filed away incorrectly, taken out of context, misunderstood or simply needs to be updated.


Once the critical faculty is up & running, shifting things like our habits, thoughts and behaviours can be really challenging if our core beliefs about ourselves & the world around us aren’t in alignment with this.


For instance, if you were wanting to create more balance in your life, you may already know that time to slow down & rest is a really important part of this, but this may feel uncomfortable if one of the core things you believe is that you don’t deserve to rest, that productivity is the number one measure of what it takes to be a good mum, that everyone else’s needs must come before your own. There can be lots of narratives around this & many more than listed there.


And this is where hypnosis comes in. Hypnosis (also known as trance) is a really natural state we all dip in & out of each & every day. If you’ve ever had that experience of arriving at your destination & suddenly thinking how the hell did I get here…you’ll know exactly what I mean. Another example is when you’re reading or watching something & someone is calling your name but you don’t hear them & then suddenly ‘come to’. There are so many examples of this because it’s a really natural state for us to be in.


As a hypnotherapist, I can guide you into trance which is where the magic happens. When you’re in trance, the critical faculty, is drawn back part of the way so that the conscious & subconscious minds can talk to each other & get on the same page.


I’ll guide you to challenge the beliefs that have kept you stuck in habits and perspectives that are no longer helpful. We’ll tend to the parts of you that need to be soothed and nourished. And I’ll guide you to create the new internal narratives that will help you create the changes you want to see and experience in a way that feels natural and just the right fit for you.

Every client I work with is unique - for some clients it is only necessary to deal with the here & now but for others it may be helpful to revisit & reframe past experiences to enable you to move on in the ways you would like to. Sometimes it’s a combination of both of these approaches. 

As with anything in life, the success of your hypnotherapy sessions is dependent on your willingness & commitment to change. Hypnotherapy can support you to make these changes feel more natural but you also need to be committed to making the change too. My sessions are a mix of emotional work & practical agreements that I can coach you towards - you can think of this as a partnership where we work together to achieve your goals.

What does hypnosis feel like?

One of the amazing things about hypnosis is that it often feels wonderfully relaxing. My clients always tend to remark on just how relaxed they feel both during & after a session with me, more relaxed than they've been in a very long time & this is a lovely part of hypnosis.

The experience of hypnosis can be different for everyone but clients often tell me it's a feeling of complete peace & relaxation & this is how I experience it too.


Some people find that their body feels lighter or heavier than normal during hypnosis. Your attention will be really focused whilst you are in trance, however you will still be in complete control & aware of your surroundings as normal.


Your imagination will likely be really vivid, for instance if I asked you to imagine yourself standing in a beautiful country meadow, it may feel as though you are actually there.


Hypnosis is different for everyone and many clients find it becomes easier each time. I will be there to guide you through the process. There's no right or wrong when it comes to hypnosis & all you have to do is listen to my voice & the words that I say. I tailor each of my sessions to you as an individual.
